When it comes to the wellbeing of EAL learners, SEND learners, and learners that bridge both groups, you may be dealing with anything from a lack of confidence to very complex trauma-related issues. Learners may, for example, be dealing with culture shock, executive function challenges, social integration issues, or bereavement. This may or may not show up, e.g. through lack of confidence, disengagement with learning, fear, PTSD or difficulty regulation and showing emotions.
Those working with these groups need to be aware that the level of wellbeing of the learner will have a direct impact on their ability to access, learn, and retain information. More complex wellbeing issues related to trauma can impair memory, concentration, and cognitive function, making language acquisition and curriculum adaptation even harder. Staff training in trauma recognition and pastoral care is essential to best support these learners.
