English Proficiency Assessment (AssessEP) by Across Cultures

AssessEP helps educators assess the English proficiency of EAL and multilingual learners aged 7 and over, including adults.

It provides a clear picture of learners’ strengths and areas for development across listening, speaking, reading and writing—helping educators establish starting points, plan targeted support and monitor progress.

What does the assessment include?

For learners at the earliest stages of English, a short pre-diagnostic assessment across listening, speaking, reading and writing helps determine the most appropriate starting point. The main assessment includes:

  • Online reading assessment: 15–40 minutes
  • Online listening assessment: 15–40 minutes
  • AI-enhanced marking and feedback for writing, with teacher oversight
  • Teacher-administered speaking assessment: 10–15 minutes

Results are provided separately for:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

This gives educators a clear profile of each learner’s English proficiency across the four language skills.

Results are approximately aligned with CEFR levels and selected EAL assessment frameworks, including ELLP, BELL and NASSEA.

AssessEP can help educators:

  • Establish learners’ English-proficiency starting points
  • Admissions testing and appropriate placement
  • Monitor progress through reassessment
