‘Village' 6-11 year-olds includes:

  • High interest, low-level primary/Intermediate focussed environment
  • Image as the language of instruction suitable for learners of any mother tongue, any level of literacy including SEND learners
  • English proficiency level testing for primary/Intermediate learners
  • Game-based learning through online learning through images to help learners support themselves in learning and associated downloadable resources:
    • Survival English (induction to English)
    • Phonics and spelling
    • Curriculum content (academic languages) where needed
  • Used for:
    • Independent learning
    • Small-group teaching
    • Differentiation in class
  • Results tracking and monitoring

‘Islands' 11-16 year-olds includes:

  • High interest, low-level Intermediate/secondary focussed environment
  • Image as the language of instruction suitable for learners of any mother tongue, any level of literacy including SEND learners
  • English proficiency level testing for Intermediate/secondary learners
  • Game-based learning through online learning through images to help learners support themselves in learning and associated downloadable resources:
    • Survival English (induction to English)
    • Phonics and spelling
    • Curriculum content (academic languages) where needed
  • Used for:
    • Independent learning
    • Small-group teaching
    • Differentiation in class

Learning Village New Zealand is supported by New Zealand-based trainers who have a wealth of experience both in language learning across the curriculum and delivering Learning Village support within the New Zealand context.

Training is carefully tailored to meet the needs of each kura so that the Learning Village’s blended learning resources are used effectively with experienced ESOL kaiako and/or subject kaiako alongside teacher aides of any ESOL skill level.

More about Learning Village

Learning Village is an image-based EAL (English as an Additional Language)programme for learners in English-medium schools. It follows a blended approach, with a comprehensive online programme supported by offline, kaiako-directed learning and resources. Suitable for ākonga of any language background, it is also ideal for learners who are not yet literate. The programme is divided into two parts: The Village, for ākonga aged 6-11, and The Islands, for ākonga aged 11-16.

The Village and The Islands include:

  • 20,000+ words and phrases for speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • Image-based learning, to assist ākonga who are unable to read in their mother tongue
  • Excellent support for Special Educational Needs ākonga
  • Techniques to help ākonga support themselves
  • Support for blended learning and for self study
